FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – The St. Louis County Police Department is investigating the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The FBI and U.S. Justice Department are investigating the shooting at the behest of the NAACP and Governor Jay Nixon’s request.

Brown was shot and killed Saturday afternoon while walking to his grandmother’s house in the 2900 block of Canfield Avenue in Ferguson. A witness walking with Brown says a Ferguson police officer approached, and using profanity, told them to get out of the street and onto the sidewalk.

There was a confrontation. Investigators say there was also a struggle inside the squad car and a shot was fired inside the vehicle. No one was hurt. Brown managed to get out of the squad car.

Investigators say he was shot several times 35 feet away. Witnesses say Brown was not armed and had his arms held high, as if surrendering to the officer, when several bullets pierced his body.

During the press conference Monday St. Louis County Police Chief Belmar disclosed that an autopsy had been performed on Michael Brown. However, officials are awaiting the results of toxicology tests that could take up to three to four weeks.

The case will be turned over to the county prosecutor to determine whether charges will be filed.
