ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Security changes are coming soon to Busch Stadium and they may slow fans down on their way into the ballpark.

Fans will start seeing walk-through metal detectors at a few gates, perhaps by the end of the month.

In the wake the of the Boston Marathon bombings, Major League Baseball ordered every team to screen 100% of their fans by Opening Day 2015.

MLB tested the detectors at Busch during the World Series against Boston.

The Cardinals are going to try to beat that 2015 deadline.

“We decided that we’re going to phase it in this year just to give us a chance to see how it’s going to work operationally and make sure we get it installed, so when it’s with the whole park, we’ll have things operating a little more smoothly,” said Cardinals VP of Stadium Operations, Joe Abernathy.

The Cardinals have been randomly screening fans with hand held wands since the bombings in Boston last spring.

Fans at the Cardinals-Reds game Tuesday night said they didn’t mind delays for security’s sake.

“I think that’s good to slow everything down, because if you want to get in early, come in early. I didn’t feel singled out at all, though,” explained Danielle Surratt.

“We went to the Arch earlier. They wanded us, metal detectors, five extra seconds. You just walk through. That was it,” said Marcus Hildebrand, who came from Tulsa for the game.

“It’s not going to be exactly like going to the airport. You shouldn’t have to take everything out of your pockets. But your cell phones and larger items, we will ask you to take out,” Abernathy said.

There are teams that started screening 100% of their fans on Opening Day, but there have been snags and delays. There’s no date set for that first phase in here, but the Cardinals will let fans know soon exactly when it’s going to be. The Cardinals are still waiting on the walk-through detectors to be delivered.
