ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-Mental illness is a topic that is far too often considered taboo.  A thirty-minute television special hosted by FOX 2’s Vic Faust focused on mental health, including topics like depression, suicide, and treatment options. The first step in making a difference in our community is bringing the subject to light.

Mental illness is common struggle and sometimes for people we least expect.  It affects men, women, boys, girls, people of all races and financial backgrounds.

Our report explained what mental illness is and the different forms people may suffer from in their life.  Three local doctors participated in a panel discussion, explaining what people go through, where they can go for help, and the latest treatment options available.

Volunteers from NAMI, the National Alliance Mental Illness, were on hand taking calls from viewers and discussing their situations and options.

We also spoke to Mark Norwine explaining how he battles mental illness every day.  Norwine, who has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, walked 200 miles across Missouri in 2013. Along the way, he talked to students and local governments about mental health and suicide prevention. His documentary, “Walking Man,” premiered at last year’s St. Louis International Film Festival.
