BERKELEY, MO (KTVI) – The St. Louis County Police Department is investigating a fatal officer involved shooting in Berkeley, Missouri. The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night at the Mobil gas station located in the 6800 block of North Hanley.

Police say a Berkeley police officer was on a routine patrol when he noticed two men on the side of the business. The officer exited his vehicle and was approaching the men, when one of the men pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.

According to police, the officer fearing for his life, fired several shots at the man, fatally wounding him. The second person fled from the scene.

Family members say the man killed was 18-year-old Antonio Martin. Martin’s body was removed from the scene about an hour and a half following the shooting.

A crowd of about 300 people also gathered at the scene.  One person tried to set fire to a nearby Quik Trip. Police were quickly able to put out the fire.

At the request of the Berkeley Police Department, St Louis County police have taken over the investigation.  Detectives from St. Louis County police have recovered the handgun pointed at the officer.
